We change lives through theatre, inspiring creativity, dreams and ambitions to help people find faith in themselves and hope
for the future.
We use the theatre to exchange social stigma for personal freedom.
What we do is very specific and very simple. We remove social stigma from people's lives through working with them in modern
fringe theatre.
Working on the theory that theatre, life and society are all closely connected we take stigmatized people and their lives
affected by social stigma, we invite them to come into our theatre, take over it, and even in some cases run it, and then
when they have a better idea of who they are and what they can actually do we give them a choice - to stay with us, to go
off and do a similar project based on their own abilities and talents, or simply walk away with a brand new perspective on
life, increased self confidence, a different perception of themselves and others, and fresh dreams, hopes and ambitions for
the future.
What we are doing in reality is reversing or negating that process of stigmatization. We immediately remove any disadvantage
or barrier the stigmatized person feels that lies between us and them - the us and them becomes simply us. In being non-judgmental
we release these people from their stereotypes, they become simply 'actors'. We still differentiate, because every single
person who takes part in our project is vitally important, but we change the labels and change the focus from who they are
to what they can do and what they actually do.
We make very basic psychological assumptions about people. Firstly, everyone has a powerful need for acceptance from other
people, and this includes social acceptance. People are more inclined to make an effort or try to do something if they can
be sure that they are going to benefit or gain something out of it, or they are going to be successful in their attempts.
Thirdly smaller successes and achievements tend to motivate people to try for bigger successes. They also tend to be more
confident and much more motivated when they are working in a group which accepts them unconditionally. Finally everyone craves
acknowledgement for something they have succeeded at, most people want their 15 minutes of fame, and going out on stage in
front of an audience and performing at the same artistic standard as a professional actor is a very powerful experience which
can often be life-changing and is usually remembered over many years.
We are also extremely confident in our methods of working with such people. Indeed, the entire artistic reputation of
Stella Baker as a playwright and stage director has been gained despite her having to train her own actors from scratch and
her own unique talent of being able to do this and prepare a theatrical production quickly to the same standard as a professional
production.
Our theory and methods are kept simple, compact, and effective. All the basic training and methods are usually taught
within the first two meetings and during the first the participants aren't given a chance to stop and think about it, they're
doing it, taking part and by the end of the first workshop they've achieved their first performance in front of the group.
They simply get sucked into it.
Our methods are proactive, challenging and immediate without being confrontational. We firmly believe in confronting the
issues, not the people.
The four basic elements of any project are trust, confidence, equality and mutual acceptance.
There are things we don't do. These include:
1. We don't work with children or minors.
2. We don't offer or substitute therapy but merely support it.
3. We don't advocate, support or promote any individual aspect, feature or characteristic from someone or their lifestyle.
4. We do not mediate in conflicts between participants and our partnership organizations.
5. We do not knowingly take on or become involved in any project unless we are confident we can guarantee both success
and lasting benefits to stigmatized people.
6. We do not seek funding for any project before setting up that project.
7. We do not reveal any information relating to participants without their prior consent and guarantee total discretion
and strict confidentiality at all times.
8. We do not accept any of the following from anyone involved on a project: drug and alcohol abuse, criminal activity,
dishonesty, antisocial behaviour or irresponsibility.
9. We do not approve or agree to any use or application of our theory or methods for commercial profit.
10. We do not accept or condone any use or application of our theory or methods to create social division, confrontation,
conflict, disruption or for the furthering of any socially divisive aim or intention.
